28. If vaccination were to be used in sheep, then the Directive requires that,
before the meat from vaccinated animals can be traded with an EC health
mark, it should either be heat treated or deboned and matured until the
country’s FMD-free status is established. There are concerns about whether it
would be economically viable to debone and mature sheep meat. This could
be critical in determining whether emergency vaccination to live would deliver
the expected benefits.
Article 58 para 13 of the EU FMD Directive 13. By way of derogation from paragraph 8 a special health mark which cannot be confused with
the health mark referred to in paragraphs 8(c) and 9(c), may be decided in accordance with the
procedure referred to in Article 89(3) for fresh meat of ruminants not subjected to the treatment in
accordance with Part A of Annex VIII, and minced meat and meat preparations produced from such
meat, which are intended for placing on the market in the a specific region of the Member State of
origin.
provides a derogation. Meat from ruminants for the home market does not require de-boning or heat treatment. It is essential that the sheep industry understands this.
