Ainsworth: Countryside welcomes CLA survey

Commenting on the Country Land and Business Association's commissioned ICM poll on Business in the Countryside, the Shadow DEFRA Secretary, Peter Ainsworth MP, said:

"We welcome the CLA-commissioned poll of public attitudes to rural recovery. The results are alarming and demonstrate the total breakdown in trust between the countryside and this Government.

"The scars from the dreadful mis-handling of the Foot and Mouth crisis run deep and will take time to heal. Ministers must make a concerted effort to aid this process with an open and positive approach to rural issues. The survey proves once again that farming is indivisible from the maintenance and success of the countryside as well as the prosperity of the economy as a whole.

"One very positive point to be taken from the research is that the countryside matters to everyone, not just those that live and work in rural areas. Now that we are fully able to visit our countryside once again, we all have the opportunity to help the recovery of rural Britain."
