Given the appalling way the government handled the foot & mouth crisis, the CAP, enlargement of the EU to bring in eastern European countries who have good growing conditions and cheap labour, closure of local abattoirs, domination of supermarkets, GM, small family farmers struggling against huge agribusinesses, illegal imports of meat, a government who seems to care little for the countryside, and a host of other problems, what is to the the future for farming inthe UK?

What of small family farms, rural life, the countryside?

What should and could be done for the future?

With few lessons seemingly learned, heaven forbid there should be another outbreak. What of local farmer's markets, local consumers? Or are consumers more intrested in what is cheap than in quality and safety?

As someone deeply concerned about these issues I would be grateful and interested to hear other opinions on the future of farming in the UK.
