The Country Land and Business Association, the voice of the rural economy, supports Sir Don Curry's call for Government to press ahead with rural reform. As the Comprehensive Spending Review draws closer, it is vital that all efforts are made to persuade the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, that the Curry report does deliver value for money.

Allan Buckwell, Chief Economist at the CLA, said:

"The CLA has supported the report from the start. We continue to stress the need for EU wide implementation and full match funding from the Treasury but remain committed to the main elements of reform that Sir Don has put forward.

"The consultations are done and the report is published. Defra have responded well to the package and it is essential that all efforts are now directed at convincing the Treasury that the reform proposals, represent real value for money and an opportunity for the countryside to recover."

"The other vital task for the Government is to keep up the pressure on our EU partners in the run up to the Commission's CAP mid term review paper expected in June, in order to persuade them to switch the emphasise of the CAP from production subsidy to environmental subsidy." -ends-
