The EC has decided that by the year 2003 all equines (including. donkeys & mules) shall have a 'passport' and therefore to known to Defra.

I can see some 'welfare arguements' for, etc., but quite apart from the expense involved, there will be those who abandon their neds to avoid the costs involved. There is also an 'in favour' argument to do with horse thefts because all animals will be 'chipped'.

However, the whole thing fills me with dread ref. the implications if, say, there is an outbreak of equine disease that maybe would cost the TB / racing industry money, and a (as yet unheard of) slaughter policy was introduced.......

Has this subject been suggested to you at all? I just read an article in Horse & Hound (which I never buy, but that a friend gave me) about this scheme, although I knew about it vaguely already.......where have our civil liberties gone? Do ANY other 'horsey folk' recognise the implications I wonder?..........
