METRIC MARTYRS PRESS RELEASE
THE PEOPLE VERSUS THE
POLITICAL ELITE
THE CASE TO DECIDE -
" WHO GOVERNS
BRITAIN?"
Will the laws made by the European Union be allowed to take
precedence over laws made by our own sovereign Parliament.
On 18th
February 2002 the Appeal Court in London confirmed the convictions of the Metric
Martyrs for the CRIMINAL OFFENCE of selling goods by traditional imperial
measures, ie. lbs/ozs. They asked for leave to appeal to the House of Lords, the
highest court in the land. The appeal is based on whether English law retains
supremacy over European Union law.
The oral hearing to determine whether
Leave to Appeal to the House of Lords is to be granted in the Metric Martyrs
case to challenge the ruling from the Court of Appeal, is scheduled for :-
11 a.m. (gather 10.30am at St. Steven's entrance)
Monday 15th
July, 2002
Committee Room 2
House of Lords.
Counsel in
the cases of
London Borough of Hackney vs. Hunt (greengrocer) and
Cornwall County Council vs. Harman (greengrocer) and Dove (fishmonger)
raised no objections to leave being granted but in the case of
Sunderland Borough Council vs. Thoburn (greengrocer)
prosecuting
counsel Sharpston and Moser objected to leave.
The hearing is to receive
both sides' oral submissions before a final decision is made.
