I am constantly puzzled by the calls to be 'more efficient' be more 'environmentally conscious, produce 'what the market wants' be 'cost effective' and 'target their products towards supermarkets'
Firstly we have been squeezed on the price we have been receiving for our products to such an extent that it's almost pointless being in the business of farming. Up here in the hills the only way to become more efficient is to have larger flocks with less time being spent looking after their welfare. As for producing what the market wants, well the market requirements are very varied across this country and in the EU, but one thing is for sure. The big buyers want one thing above all else, and that is the products at the cheapest price so they can get the maximum profit from the customer.
Look at the prices farmers have been getting for their products and the prices on the supermarket shelves. All the above calls from government is so much twaddle.
