A COMPARISON OF THE CUMBRIA REPORT & THE EU FMD REPORT IN RESPECT OF THE CONTIGUOUS CULL
EU draft document on FMD:"It remains controversial and doubtful whether the 24/48 hour contiguous cull strategy was really responsible for curbing the epidemic."
CUMBRIA FMD INQUIRY REPORT :The development of the contiguous culling policy was more scientific than the 3km cull, although it has proved equally contentious. The policy was based on a computer model providing a simulation of the epidemic..the evidence seems to suggest that the duration of the epidemic was reduced as the ratio of "exposed premises culled to infected premises culled increased.
Good value at £95,000? Questions have to be asked.
NOTE:-The comment by the EU FMD Inquiry committee that the 24/48 cull was ineffective needs to be further amplified.
The 24/48 culling times were not always adhered to. It was the EU FOOD & VETERINARY OFFICE that recommended the 3km/contigious cull to "get ahead of the disease." This recommendation occurred after their visit to the UK 12-16 March 2001.
The EU FMD INQUIRY TEAM appears to have conveniently forgotten this fact.
