From an article in This is London entitled: Foot-and-mouth started by 16 sheep" In the long term, he (Jim Scudamore) told the committee, every sheep is likely to carry an electronic ear tag that will identify its origin and movements."
We would not be surprised to hear that a new rule, enforcing the electronic tagging of farmers, is even now being drawn up by a couple of DEFRA solicitors. The bill, to be entitled something like "Freedom Tagging for Farmers (Identity Crisis) bill " will be rushed through Parliament before MPs read the small print.
Janet has this to say about the electronic tagging of sheep:
"Have just read Jim Scudamore's comments on tagging every sheep electronically. Does this man realise that 40-45Kg lambs have been selling for £20-25? As I understand it, the tags at their cheapest are around £2 and the reading machine is about £500. Ok so prices of these things tend to drop as the technology becomes more widely available but it will still be a far cry from the individually numbered tags I use at 14p a shot. Can we expect meat from abroad to enter this country with a complete carefully monitored history?
Get real Mr. S - come and get some mud on your boots again and look at the size of the cheques coming to farmers from the slaughter houses and collecting centres. You would need to sell 3 lambs to pay for a return ticket to London from here! "
