Over the years we have had much valuable help and have made many friends through the WWOOF organisationwhich arranges for its members to stay on and work on Organic farms. The WWOOFers benefit from an interesting working holiday on a farm and can learn about the work of the farm; the "hosts" like us, benefit [usually!] from the extra help, and the good company.
I read in our annual renewal letter that the membership of the organisation has dropped by a third [probably as a result of the way foot and mouth disease has been handled]. It would be distressing for this useful organisation to become a casualty of our government's unrelenting attack on the family farm. There are still lots of Organic farms who would welcome interested helpers!
I believe that the National Trust runs a similar scheme: but they charge the visitors for the experience.
WWOOF has a website www.wwoof.org which can provide membership information.
